Kigali, Rwanda – Don Bosco Technical Secondary School (TSS) Gatenga and the Don Bosco Hospitality Centre have strengthened their commitment to sustainable Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through the successful implementation of two complementary infrastructure initiatives focused on renewable energy and water access.
From 12–23 May 2025, Don Bosco TSS Gatenga hosted a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Training of Trainers programme involving instructors from Don Bosco TVET Centres in Uganda and Rwanda. Implemented in partnership with Association of Sendea Uganda Ltd and Engineers Without Borders Germany, and supported by Jugend Eine Welt, the training equipped participants with practical skills in solar PV installation, system configuration, remote monitoring and maintenance. As part of the hands-on learning experience, participants installed solar power systems, solar street lighting and energy-efficient LED lighting, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable learning environment.
Complementing these efforts, the Don Bosco Hospitality Centre in Gatenga recently completed a comprehensive water installation project that now provides reliable access to clean water for approximately 500 students, staff and visitors daily. The project included the installation of two water tanks with a combined capacity of 20,000 litres and a modern water distribution network designed to improve sanitation, hygiene and overall wellbeing within the Centre.
Together, these initiatives demonstrate how investments in sustainable infrastructure can directly enhance the quality of vocational education and training. Access to renewable energy and clean water supports practical learning activities, improves living and learning conditions, and strengthens institutional resilience while reducing environmental impact.
The initiatives closely align with the objectives of the SUSTAIN-IT Project, which promotes sustainable, inclusive and environmentally responsible TVET systems. By integrating renewable energy solutions and responsible resource management into educational settings, Don Bosco Gatenga is providing learners with practical examples of sustainability in action while contributing to the development of greener and more resilient communities.
The successful implementation of these initiatives was made possible through the collaboration and support of multiple partners, including Engineers Without Borders Germany, Association of Sendea Uganda Ltd, Jugend Eine Welt, Fondazione Opera Don Bosco nel Mondo (Milano–Lugano), and the Planning and Development Office (PDO), whose contributions continue to advance sustainable development and quality education within the Don Bosco network.
